We hope you have a lovely stay. This pack provides information about the property and the area.
2 - Overview
Summary of information about Ty’r Celyn
General Information
We hope you like our house. Ty’r Celyn is literally translated as ‘House of the Holly’, hence the name Holly Tree House. It was built in the late 80s by the father of the owner. You will see a caricature of him in the corner of the dining room. He was well known around the village and was always willing to help with some very long tales to tell. Around the house you will also find some other information about the house and the village.
We love the beauty of this area of Wales, which has wonderful views with the sun setting over the sea. The house is on the edge of the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), so please do go and see the mountains, they are beautiful in their different colours at all times of the year. Or go for a walk on the local beach which is just a short walk away and a great place to let the dogs run. You will find more information on places to see while you are here towards the end of this pack
In this pack you should find all the information you need for your stay, including details on how to work the various kitchen appliances, TV, etc.

Hints & Tips
If you find something you really enjoyed doing such as a walk on a particular beach, a museum you went to, a restaurant that was great or anything else that just made your holiday fun, please write it in the Hints & Tips book. There are many things to do listed at the back of this pack, but there will always be things to see & do that aren’t listed, so please let others know about them.
Dogs
The house throughout its life has always been used by dogs, so your dogs are allowed throughout the house. However, please do not allow dirty dogs onto the sofas and in particular do not allow dogs to jump onto the beds.
In addition, please do not go into, or let your dogs into, the two fields. A local farmer regularly has sheep on them, and they should not be disturbed.
Children
The child gate is stored in the under-stairs cupboard. There is a spanner to tighten them hung on the inside of the door to the cupboard.
When setting up the travel cot, make sure you lock the sidebars straight prior to pushing the bottom down. This will save you getting very frustrated because they won’t lock when the base is pushed down.
Yard Safety
At one time the property was a working market garden, and one of the green houses still remains. Because of the glass, we have marked this area out of bounds.
Additionally, there is a rusted threshing machine. Please do not touch it.
Smoking
The house is a no smoking area. You are of course welcome to smoke outside, please do dispose of your cigarette ends appropriately.
Water Feature
You are welcome to use the water feature outside the kitchen window. It can be switched on where it is plugged into the power socket to the left of the water feature. Please make sure you securely close the lid to the sockets by clicking the locks in place.
Make sure there is enough water in the system – if the pools are low/empty it needs filling. You can just top up by adding water into the pools, in particular the bottom left pool where it flows back to the reservoir.
To conserve energy, please switch off if you go out or before you go to bed.
Bike Shed
The left-hand door when you look at the building in the yard is empty. You are welcome to store what you like in there. Please remember don’t forget to take your belongings when you leave. The lock on the door has the same code as the key code to the house.
BBQ
There is a BBQ stored in the bike shed which you are welcome to use. The tools and scraper brush for it should be stored with it. If not there, then please look in the kitchen drawers in case they have been placed there.
Please leave it in the state you would like to find it in. Thanks!
Gardener
A gardener mows the lawn and does other job around the garden on a regular basis. If this work will get in the way of your party/BBQ/sunbathing please do let them know, but if at all possible, please accommodate them so they can keep the garden as you would like to see it.
Enjoy your stay!

Specials wash cycles
Sport Intensive (wash cycle 8) is for washing lightly soiled sports clothing fabrics (tracksuits, shorts, etc.); for best results, we recommend not exceeding the maximum load indicated in the “Table of wash cycles”. We recommend using a liquid detergent and dosage suitable for a half-load.
Sport Light (wash cycle 9) is for washing lightly soiled sports clothing fabrics (tracksuits, shorts, etc.); for best results, we recommend not exceeding the maximum load indicated in the “Table of wash cycles”. We recommend using a liquid detergent and dosage suitable for a half-load.
Sport Shoes (wash cycle 10) is for washing sports shoes; for best results, do not wash more than 2 pairs simultaneously.
Express Wash & Dry (wash cycle 13) was designed to wash and dry lightly soiled garments quickly. This cycle may be used to wash and dry a laundry load of up to 0.5 kg in just 35 minutes.
To achieve optimum results, use liquid detergent and pre-treat cuffs, collars and stains.
Personalisation
Setting the temperature - Turn the TEMPERATURE knob to set the wash temperature (see Table of wash cycles). The temperature may be lowered, or even set to a cold wash. The washer-dryer will automatically prevent you from selecting a temperature which is higher than the maximum value set for each wash cycle.
Setting the drying cycle - Turn the DRYING knob to select the desired drying option. There are two options:
Based on time: From 40 minutes to 180.
Based on the desired laundry dryness level:
Iron dry: suitable for clothes which will need ironing afterwards. the remaining dampness softens creases, making them easier to remove.
Hanger dry: ideal for clothes which do not need to be dried fully.
Cupboard dry suitable for laundry which can be put back in a cupboard without being ironed.
If your laundry load to be washed and dried is much greater than the maximum stated load (see adjacent table), perform the wash cycle, and when the cycle is complete, divide the garments into groups and put some of them back in the drum. At this point, follow the instructions provided for a “Drying only” cycle. Repeat this procedure for the remainder of the load.

8.4 - Eryri (Snowdonia)
Nature and Wildlife - Eryri
We have a lot to talk about. For starters there’s the Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), at 840 square miles one of the biggest in Britain. It also gives you a big high – Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), at 3,560ft/1085m, is the highest summit in Wales and England. If you’re more of a sand-between-your-toes kind of person there’s coastline too – hundreds of miles of it along Cardigan Bay (part of the Eryri National Park) and the Llŷn Peninsula, designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. So we don’t just serve up rocky mountains. You’ll also find green hills, rushing rivers and valleys clothed in ancient oakwoods, and a coastline of sublime estuaries and secluded bays, dizzy headlands and big beaches. The wildlife seems to like it. We’re a sanctuary for countless plants and animals – from the crags of Cwm Idwal, home of the exquisite Snowdon lily, all the way to Bardsey Island off Eryri’s ‘Land’s End’ and its teeming colonies of Manx shearwater. So pack your binoculars. Bring your camera.
Our natural heritage can be seen at its very best at National Nature Reserves (NNRs) and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, mostly cared for by the Countryside Council for Wales. We have more NNRs than any other National Park in Britain. Go right to the top on Yr Wyddfa the highest nature reserve in Wales, where birds of prey such as peregrine falcon and raven nest amongst the jagged cliffs, and the Snowdon lily and other hardy arctic-alpine plants have evolved to cope with extreme conditions. Lower down, the mountain is fringed by beautiful woodlands of oak, alder and wych elm.
Betws y Coed is encircled with thick woodland. Gwydir, like Coed-y-Brenin, is a mixed forest. Here you’ll find Douglas fir and Norway spruce as well as some of Wales’s finest oak glades, and – hidden away amongst the trees – the secret mountain lakes of Llŷn Geirionydd and Llŷn Crafnant. Follow paths and old miners’ tracks through the woods, looking out for buzzards, peregrines, merlins, goshawks and black grouse.
8.5 - Towns & Villages

8.6.1 - Caernarfon
Caernarfon Castle
Caernafon Castle is probably the most famous of all of the castles in Wales, rising above the Menai Strait, and astounding visitors with its sheer size and scale.
It was built in 1283 by Edward I as a military stronghold, but also served the purpose of a seat of government and royal palace for the king. The castle was designed to emulate the architectural design of Constantinople, the capital city of the Roman and Byzantine Empire. It was also said to represent the dream castle of Welsh myth and legend, ’the fairest that ever man saw'.
If you’re planning on visiting Caernarfon, make sure to take part in the walks along the walls to really get a sense of the history of the site. There are also some fantastic imaginative exhibitions located within the towers that can be discovered along these wall walks. The castle is also home to the Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Wales’s oldest regiment.
8.6.2 - Dolbadarn
Dolbadarn Castle
Dolbadarn Castle is situated in a unique position in the Welsh countryside, above Llŷn Padarn, and between Caernarfon and Eryri. It was built by the Welsh Princes in the 13th Century and protected the north area of Wales from attack, by allowing the garrison to blockade anyone’s movement through the Llanberis Pass.
The castle was used as a manor house for some time before falling into ruin. After its ruin, it was often considered a desirable destination for painters, since the views of Wales’ characteristic green landscape and towering mountains were awe-inspiring.
Don’t forget to climb up into the tower and see exactly what guards would have seen, keeping an eye out for any attackers!
8.6.3 - Criccieth
Criccieth Castle
The magnificent views from the headland which houses Criccieth Castle make it a crucial place to visit if you’re looking for historical sites across Wales. It was in such a desirable location that the Welsh and the English fought over it many times, and it changed hands just as frequently.
One of the most interesting aspects of the castle is that, due to the number of different owners and all the different changes made to the buildings, it is hard to determine which part of the castle came from which time period. No one quite knows what form the castle took in its first instance, and it’s also difficult to know whether it was the Welsh or English who built it.
During your visit, make sure to look out for the exhibits and information on Welsh castles, as well as, exhibits on the Anglo-Norman writer Gerald of Wales, best known for his topographies, which were some of the first descriptions of Ireland and Wales.
8.6.4 - Tomen y Mur
Tomen y Mur Roman Fort
Tomen y Mur is a Roman fort, situated in Gwynedd, and constructed in 78 AD. When the Romans first occupied Britain, they found quite hostile resistance in this area, and the fort was constructed to provide some safety and security for communications and maintain order amongst the local people during the guerrilla attacks.
Nowadays, the fort has fallen into ruin, but some of the walls have been reconstructed to give a true sense of what it would have been like, so many years ago. The site itself had been a key location for Celtic mythology and Welsh legend as the site where Lleu sought revenge on his wife and her lover.
Nestled deep in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), the beautiful landscape surrounding this fort is breath-taking, and perfect for capturing some fantastic photographs of the Welsh countryside and exploring it through walks.
8.6.5 - Cymer Abbey
Cymer Cistercian Abbey
Founded for the Cistercian order in 1198, this simple abbey church has a great and varied history, much like the other sites on this list, for having simple beginnings and then being involved in the wars of Edward I. It started off life as an abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and provided a home for the Cistercian community that tended to their sheep and horses for Llewelyn the Great.
However, after the dissolution of the 1530s, not much of the abbey survives. The remaining ruins include walls surviving about nave archway height and the remains of the church and the west tower. You are also able to see the foundations of the cloister and other monastic buildings.
The surrounding landscape is still very picturesque, especially with the ruins of the abbey to juxtapose the natural greenness of the area. So visit and explore the abbey, marvel at the aspects that are still standing and feel the rich history that is embedded into the very stone.

10 - The Village
Some information about the village and things to see.
The village of Clynnog Fawr lies on the north coast of the Llŷn Peninsula, near Caernarfon in Gwynedd. ‘Clynnog’ means ’the place of the holly-trees’. The cottage lies next door to the large parish church of St Beuno, of which there is more information below.

St Beuno
The church in the village was founded by St Beuno, who was descended from the princes of Powys. It is thought to have been founded in the early 7th century.
Originally it was a place of prayer, teaching, ministry and mission, acting as both monastery and college. It soon became a stopping place on the pilgrimage route to Bardsey Island (known as the ‘Island of 20,000 Saints’). As such St Beuno also became a place of pilgrimage, with the well shown on the map also thought to have healing powers.
The church that is on the site today was built in the 15th and 16th century, with the small chapel being thought to be located on the site of the original church. Among the objects of interest inside is a set of dog handling tongs. These are telescopic, with several sharp spikes at the business end. These were used in the days when dogs were permitted in churches and fights and other misdemeanours were common.
Village store
The village store (Londis) is directly across the road from Bodfasarn (the house on the main road that Ty’r Celyn is attached to). It provides essential groceries and other goods.
St Beuno’s well
The well was thought visitors to have healing powers. It is one of a number of wells dedicated to St Beuno across Wales. More detail can be found here
.
Cromlech
The Cromlech is an ancient burial chamber. It can be accessed from the track that leads down to the beach as seen on the map. Just turn left as your reach a bend in the track and go straight on for a couple of fields, ensuring you re-close any gates you open. Always good to see at sunset.
Beach
Go out of the front door or through the yard gates onto the track past the cottage. Keep straight on and you will come to the beach. It is quite pebbly, but is good for a dog run and can be glorious at sunset. If you walk around to the right when the tide is out you will usually find a sandy area which is good for kids to play on.
